Why Porn Needs to Focus More on Female Pleasure

The male orgasm continues to be valued more in porn.

It’s starting to become a regular pattern for me. Lying in bed, feeling horny and deciding to look for some porn to help the mood. I scroll through Reddit, Twitter and Pornhub desperately looking for something that will satisfy me, unfortunately my attempts are doomed and ultimately I become frustrated.

This frustration isn’t mine alone – The Netflix documentary Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On found that 1 in 3 young women who watch porn struggle to find content they like.

I don’t need a romantic plot in the porn I watch. But titles such as “big tit girl gets fucked in the ass wearing school girl uniform” isn’t going to do much for me. All I’m after is a male porn star to pleasure a woman until she reaches climax.

Annoyingly, I struggle to remember the last time I saw a woman orgasm in porn (no I’m not counting fake ones).

The Spectator found that the global porn industry has an estimated annual revenue of $90 billion. That’s bigger than giants such as Disney and Netflix.

With an industry dominated by male directors and male producers, the biggest problem with porn isn’t the over-acting, it’s the complete disregard of the female audience and therefore neglecting our pleasure.

Neglecting female pleasure in porn implies that sex is something done to women rather than something we can do too.

Instead, it’s marketed to satisfy the male audience. With a variety of videos including 15-minute-long blow jobs and tit jobs all without once touching the woman co-star. You’d think after all that maybe he’ll go down on her for an equal length of time? Wrong! It ends with a facial.

The concept of women watching porn continues to baffle many men, I’ve had experiences of telling men I watch porn and they’ve quickly had to hide their disapproval. But porn isn’t just a media form for men, the latest findings from Pornhub found that 32% of women worldwide are using the site.

I blame patriarchal attitudes, in which female pleasure is silenced, something we should even be ashamed of. When I was at secondary school it was accepted if a guy watched porn, however as girls we had to keep this a dirty little secret.

Neglecting female pleasure in porn implies that sex is something done to women rather than something we can do too.

This isn’t just an issue of not being able to masturbate, it opens up severe misunderstandings during sex.

He asked me if I orgasmed during a blowjob.

Sex education is woeful. The Guardian found an increasing number of British teenager’s regard porn as an educational tool as schools fail to provide them with information on what to do during sex. Porn as a source of sex education therefore cannot be overlooked.

The lack of foreplay shown in sex means many men have no knowledge of how, or what, to do during sex in order to get their partner to orgasm. Often, porn will do prep work behind the scenes or cut it entirely from the shot. The absence of this plays a significant role on our sex lives.

I used to have a terrible sex life. My ex would shove it in after just a few minutes of kissing, he wouldn’t bother to touch my clit. I had many uncomfortable moments of trying to guide his hand down to my clit and show him but instead he got angry with me.

Despite being in a relationship with him for over a year he continued to follow porn like a guide book instead of listening to me. Leading to moments such as asking if I orgasmed during a blowjob. I was regularly unsatisfied during and after sex.

However, I haven’t lost all hope. A change is coming, this change is from female directors entering the porn industry, to take back control to show women as equal sex players rather than an object for the male gaze to fuck as they please.

The first episode of the Hot Girls Wanted documentary centers on ‘Women on top’, which features Erika Lust a female erotic film director who believes showing porn from the feminine viewpoint is vital.

Lust told the show: “It’s just not fair that only men work in pornography. That only men are the ones portraying human sexuality.”

Her site, Erikalust.com, features a variety of porn which highlights passion and intimacy over “punish fucking women”. Lust places a greater emphasis on showing the woman orgasm rather than the man: “I wanted to see something made for women.”

I desperately want more women in leadership roles in the porn industry, their voice is vital to changing what porn focuses on. Women can no longer be considered the secondary characters in sex.

Our pleasure and enjoyment must be show. Women deserve to enjoy sex and view porn without feeling shamed or ignored.

Sex Education constantly fails women. We’re never taught about our own vaginal health. We spoke to a gynaecologist about what to do if you have Thrush or a UTI.
