We Spoke to a Dermatologist about Why You Should Wear SPF and The Best Products to Use

We should never leave the house without it.

SPF is the ultimate summer product. It is the definition of essential but let’s be honest, we’ve all downplayed the importance of it at some point in our lives. Whether we think it will ruin our make-up, make our skin feel sticky or we just don’t have the effort to apply it – our mindset around SPF needs to change.

We have spoken to dermatologist Dr. Sison about the importance of SPF and have put together a list of our favourite Cult Beauty SPF products to encourage you to keep your skin safe this summer.

How Important is SPF? – An Interview with Dr Sison

How does SPF affect our skin?

Sunscreens form a protective film on the skin surface and the UV filters in them reflect, scatter and/or absorb UV rays that would otherwise penetrate our skin and cause damage.

Does SPF ruin makeup or make it look bad and how can we include it into our makeup routine?

It does not ruin makeup or make it look bad. The key here is finding a sunscreen that works well for your skin and there are a lot of great options available in the market today.

How does the sun affect our skin?

The UV rays from the sun cause photoaging, sunburn, precancerous lesions and skin cancer. Sunscreen can help protect our skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.

What are some common myths about SPF?

There is misinformation that sunscreen filters, particularly oxybenzone, cause skin cancer. It was already clarified that the study was done on rats, where they were fed high doses of oxybenzone. According to an article published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, it would take 277 years of sunscreen use to achieve the dose used in the studies done on rats.

What is your ultimate summer skin advice?

The best sunscreen is the one that you will use and reapply correctly. Choose sunscreens with SPF of at least 30. It should be broad-spectrum to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays and it should also be water-resistant. Aside from using sunscreens, make sure to seek shade when the UV rays are most intense and wear UV protective eyewear and clothing whenever applicable. Drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated as well.
